Preliminary Work

Information 

• Get one or more people to help when installing/removing heavy or difficult-to-reach components.
• This will prevent or reduce the risk of possible damage.

Information 

• Spray corroded nuts and screws with rust solvent or heat using a hot-air gun before removal.

1. Move selector lever to position -N-. 
2. Disconnect ground contact for the battery under the driver's seat.
3. Remove engine compartment trim panel at the left.

4. Disconnect plug connection -1-  for oxygen sensors at the left and right in the engine compartment and expose wiring harness.
   1. 4.1  Disconnect plug connection for oxygen sensor downstream of primary catalytic converter.
   2. 4.2  Left plug connection: Unclip wiring harness -arrows-  by opening up the lower clip at the top.

   3. 4.3  Right plug connection: Unclip both wiring harnesses -2-  (-arrow-  ).

5. Loosen cardan shaft at the transfer gear and secure it with a tie-wrap -2-  to prevent it from becoming kinked.

6. Remove engine guard.

   > 108019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING ENGINE GUARD

7. Remove front cardan shaft.

   > 390219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT CARDAN SHAFT

8. Unscrew fastening screws -1-  for the left and right catalytic converters at the rear sheetmetal holders -2-  .

9. Remove catalytic converters.

   > 267319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING (MAIN) CATALYTIC CONVERTER

   1. 9.1  Spray flange nuts with rust solvent and leave it to take effect or heat flange nuts using a hot-air gun if necessary.
   2. 9.2  Screw off flange nuts.
   3. 9.3  Remove catalytic converters.
   4. 9.4  Replace seals and flange nuts.
10. Remove heat shield on the universal joint.
    1. 10.1  Unscrew fastening screws -1-  on the heat shield -2- 
    2. 10.2  Remove heat shield.

11. Unscrew fastening screws -1-  on the holders -2-  for the primary catalytic converters -3-  at the left and right.

12. Loosen primary catalytic converters.

    > 267619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING PRIMARY CATALYTIC CONVERTER

    1. 12.1  Spray lock nuts -1-  for the primary catalytic converter with rust solvent and leave it to take effect.
    2. 12.2  Loosen lock nuts on each primary catalytic converter.

13. Remove oxygen sensors at the primary catalytic converters.
    1. 13.1  Tip the primary catalytic converter -1-  down.
    2. 13.2  Loosen and unscrew oxygen sensor -2-  using an open-ended wrench (a/f 22) -3-  .
    3. 13.3  Remove the relevant primary catalytic converter and oxygen sensor.
    4. 13.4  Replace seal and lock nuts.

14. Release electric plug connections -1- and 2-  at the right of the transfer gear -a, b-  and disconnect them -A, -B-  .

15. Release electric plug connections -1- and 2-  at the bottom of the transfer gear -a, b-  and disconnect them -A, -B-  .
    1. 15.1  Pull connector -1-  out of the sheetmetal holder.

16. Remove transmission cross member.
    1. 16.1  Unscrew M10 fastening screws -B-  on the transmission mount.
    2. 16.2  Unscrew M10 fastening screws -A-  on the outer cross member and remove cross member.

17. Remove transfer gear.
