Installing Automatic Transmission

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 

    Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

Information 

>373055 REPLACING TIPTRONIC CONTROL UNIT 

NOTE: Torque converter installed incorrectly 
  • Risk of damage to transmission and torque converter 

    → Always observe installation dimension

    → When securing the transmission, check that the torque converter can turn freely and is not jammed.

    → Do not use force when screwing the engine and transmission together

Information 

  1. Before installing the automatic transmission, make sure that the torque converter is seated correctly in the transmission be" housing.

    1. 1.1  Check installation dimension -a- 

      > Control value (minimum dimension) 4.5 mm --

  2. Insert the magnetic > 9689 - centering pin-1- into a screw bore in the torque converter.
    1. 2.1  Align the torque converter using the centering pin in such a way that the centering pin is flush with the relevant bore in the drive plate.
    2. 2.2  Insert a > 9595 - locating pin into the bore on the transmission bell housing in order to secure the torque converter.

    Information 

    • Get one or more people to help when installing/removing heavy of difficult to-reach components.
    • This will prevent or reduce the risk of possible damage.

    Information 

    • When removing and installing the transmission, make sure that the torque converter does not slip out of the transmission.
    • Secure the torque converter through the bore on the underside of the transmission with a > 9595 - locating pin.
  3. Gradually guide in the automatic transmission with the help of another person.

    Check the portion of the centering pin! 

    1. 3.1  Use the > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  to lift the automatic transmission as required and push it forward so that it can be positioned on the engine.

      The dowel sleeves on the engine flange must fit into the bores on the transmission flange. 

  4. Fit and tighten new aluminum screws -1-  with the holders -2-  for the primary catalytic converters.
    1. 4.1  Only fit the screws loosely on the holders.

  5. > 9689 - Centering pin must then be pulled off.

    Information 

    • When loosening or tightening the converter screws, the help of another person is required in order to turn the engine.
    • Check the position of the converter screws using a mirror.
    • The converter screws must be replaced.
  6. Only fit new screws for the torque converter initially.
    1. 6.1  Check positions of the screw thread -1-  before fitting using a mirror -2-  .

    2. 6.2  For each screw, get another person to continue to turn the crankshaft clockwise using > 9714 - socket-wrench insert and a torque wrench.
    3. 6.3  Fit a new screw on special tool > 9688 - bit insert and screw in screw -arrow-  .

  7. > 9687 - Insert part must be fitted on the bit insert. Then fit screw loosely, but do not tighten it.

  8. Complete the steps described above for each screw.
  9. Pull off the > 9595 - locating pin before tightening the converter screws.
    CAUTION: Damage to converter screws due to excessive tightening torque. 
    • Risk of damage to screw thread or torque converter. 

      Observe specified adjustment value for torque wrench. 65 Nm (48 ftlb.) on torque wrench = 85 Nm (63 ftlb.) on the screw.

  10. Tighten screws for torque converter.
    1. 10.1  Get another person to continue to turn the crankshaft for each screw.
    2. 10.2  Check the position of the screws using a mirror. Correct the position if necessary by turning the crankshaft.
    3. 10.3  Tighten screws using a magnetic bit insert, insert part and torque wrench.

      Make sure that the torque wrench is set to 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)! 

      > Tightening torque 85 (63 ftlb.) Nm --

  11. Insert plug for converter assembly opening. To do this, moisten the groove on the plug with water.
  12. Check the position of the stopper -2-  using a mirror -1-  . The sealing lip must make contact all the way around -3-  .

  13. Fit primary catalytic converter with a new seal loosely on the flange.

    Fit both primary catalytc converters on turbo vehicles. 

  14. Tighten aluminum screws on the engine/transmission flange using special tool > 9768 - electronic torque wrench, 2 - 100 Nm/1.5 - 74 ftlb.-1-  .

    Given the limited accessibility, tighten the two bottom screws using the tools specified in Step 15 and to the specified torque! 

    1. 14.1 Tighten the side and upper threaded joint: 

      > Initial tightening 38 (28 ftlb.) Nm --

      > Final tightening torque angle 90 Degree --

    TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

    > 9768 - Electronic torque wrench, 2 - 100 Nm (1.5 - 74 ftlb.)
    Ratchet head, 1/2-inch
    Ratchet head, 3/8-inch
    Socket-wrench insert, 3/8-inch Torx E20
    Socket-wrench insert, 1/2-inch Torx E20
    > 9687/1 - Insert
  16. Tighten the lower aluminum screws -7-  on the automatic transmission: use special tool > 9687/- insert for easier access.
    1. 16.1 Initial tightening: 

      > Initial tightening 27.6 (21 ftlb.) Nm --

    2. 16.2 Final tightening: 

      > Final tightening torque angle 90 Degree --

  17. Clip transmission vent hose -1-  into the holder -2-  .

  18. Connect cable plug -1-  for pulse sender on the automatic transmission at the bottom left and check that it is seated securely.

    Secure line at the retaining clip for coolant lines.

  19. Position holder -2-  for coolant lines on the automatic transmission and fit the screws -1-  .

    Remove tie-wrap.

  20. Connect cable plug -1-  to the control valve -2-  (-arrow A-  ) and check that it is seated securely.

  21. Position heat exchanger -1-  on the automatic transmission and tighten M8 screws -2-  .

    Remove tie-wrap. 

    > Tightening torque 20 (15 ftlb.) Nm --

    Information 

    Replace seals and O-rings.

  22. Fit ATF lines -2-  with new O-rings on the heat exchanger -3-  .

    Ensure that the lines are seated correctly. 

    1. 22.1  Tighten M6 fastening screws -1-  .

      >> Tightening torque 8 (6 ftlb.) Nm  --

  23. Fit ATF lines -2-  with new O-rings on the automatic transmission -3-  .

    Ensure that the lines are seated correctly. 

    1. 23.1  Fit and tighten M8 fastening screw -1-  .

      > Tightening torque 20 (15 ftlb.) Nm --

  24. Secure holder -1-  for ATF lines to the front of the automatic transmission.
    1. 24.1  Tighten M8 fastening screw.

      > Tightening torque 23 (17 ftlb.) Nm --

    2. 24.2  Clip in wire harness on ATF line -A-  .

  25. Fit heat shield.
    1. 25.1  Tighten M6 screws -1-  on the heat shield -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 15 (11 ftlb.) Nm --

  26. Fit selector lever cable -3-  on automatic transmission.

    1. 26.1  Clip in selector lever cable at the ball joint -1-  .
    2. 26.2  Fit and tighten M6 fastening screws -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 10 (7.5 ftlb.) Nm --
