Removing Tie Rod

Installation position

To make it easier to remove the tie rod, swivel the relevant wheel bearing housing so that the tie rod is fully extended.
Unscrew fastening nut -1- from the ball pin for the tie-rod ball -2- until it is flush with the thread of the ball pin.

Press tie-rod ball off the wheel bearing housing. > Pressing off tie rod When pressing it off, make sure not to damage the rpm sensor.

Pressing off tie rod
1. 3.1 Position > T10187 - ball joint puller under the ball pin and fit it on the fastening nut.
2. 3.2 Press tie-rod ball out of the tapered end of the wheel carrier using > T10187 - ball joint puller . Screw in hexagon on the > T10187 - ball joint puller until the tie-rod ball comes out of the tapered end of the wheel carrier.
Screw fastening nut -1- off the ball pin of the tie-rod ball -2- .

Right tie rod:
Remove fastening screws -1- on the heat shield -2- near the bellows -3- for the right tie rod.

Pull out heat shield -2- .
Loosen the outer clamp -arrow- on the bellows using > VAS 6890 - Spring Band Clamp Pliers .

Loosen the inner clamp -1- on the bellows using suitable pliers.

Carefully pull the bellows outwards until the axial joint is accessible. > Pulling out bellows

Unscrew octagon -1- on the ball joint of the tie rod -2- from the rack-and-pinion using > Nr.95-2 - V.A.G 1923 open-jawed wrench insert .
