Installing Tie Rod

Information 

  1. During installation, fit new sealing rings -arrow-  on the steering gear. Take care not to damage the sealing ring when fitting the joint boot.

  2. Fit tie rod. > Axial joint on tie rod (shown as an example) 

    > 4X00IN TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR STEERING

    Ensure that no damage (scoring or similar damage) is caused to the steering rack.

  3. Fit joint boot (not twisted) and secure with new clamps > Large clamp (shown as an example)  .

    Fit the small clamp using > VAS 6890 - Spring Band Clamp Pliers  if necessary.

  4. When fitting the joint boot on the steering gear, make sure that the boot is not twisted.

    Fit the joint boot using a new clamp > Large clamp (shown as an example)  .

    The arrow denotes the clamp lug.

  5. When fitting the large clamps, it is essential to observe the following installation position (right/left). 

    The clamps must be fitted at the correct position.

    Place > V.A.G 1275A - Hose clip pliers  on the clamp lug and lightly clamp > Fitting large clamp (shown as an example)  .

    It should still be possible to turn the clamps easily.

    Check the position of the clamp once more, correcting if necessary, and then compress the clamp lug fully.

  6. The clamp on the left joint boot must be clamped on the steering gear so that the clamp lug -arrow-  is in line with the steering shaft!

    Failure to observe this can lead to constrictions in the area of the supply and return lines.

  7. The clamp of the right joint boot must be clamped on the steering gear so that the clamp lug -arrow-  points horizontally with the front axle carrier (suspension subframe) in direction of travel.

    Failure to observe this can lead to constrictions in the area of the heat shield.

  8. Right tie rod: 

    Fit heat shield -2-  .

    Fit fastening screws -1-  on the heat shield -2-  near the joint boot -3-  of the right tie rod.
