Disassembling Front Spring Strut (Steel Springs)

  • Risk of squashing or bruising 
    1. Do not reach into the danger area.
    2. Relieve tension on components before starting work.
    3. Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.

The next sections describe the spring struts with and without PASM.

  1. On vehicles with PASM, push both grommets on the connector cable (PASM) to one side.
  2. On vehicles with PASM, mark the position of the cables so that they can be fitted at the same position again during re-installation.

    Loosen the locking mechanism in the connector and unpin both cables from the connector.

  3. On vehicles with PASM, remove the grommets by opening the grommets slightly using a commercially available Seeger circlip ring pliers. This makes it easier to pull the pins through the grommets.
  4. To make assembly easier, mark the spring strut according to concave support, steel spring and shock absorber. > Marking spring strut

    WARNING: Danger of injury due to spring tensioning. 
    • Never use an impact bolter to loosen or tighten the lock nut. 
    • Use a commercially available change-over ratchet. 
  5. Pre-tension the coil springs using a > Nr.121-1 Pos.1 - spring compressor  and > Nr.121-1 Pos.6 - tensioning plate  until the piston rod is relieved.

  6. Carefully remove the lock nut on the piston rod at the supporting mount using > 3353 - socket-wrench insert or for PASM, > 3077 - socket-wrench insert.

  7. Remove all components from the piston rod.
