Information
- To prevent damage to the drive shaft, suspension subframe or transmission flange, slide a protective tube (shop-made) over the drive shaft.
Wheel bearing housing with upper control arms
- Left side only: Break off protective plastic ring -1-
using a slotted screwdriver.
Breaking off protective plastic ring
- Position two mounting levers and carefully press the drive shaft -1-
outwards.
Fitting mounting levers
- Release central connector -1-
from the ABS wire harness at the body -a-
and disconnect it -A-
.
Wheel bearing housing wiring harness plug connection
- Unclip ABS wire harness mounting -2- at the body -B- .
- Remove the brake calliper from the wheel bearing housing and suspend it at a suitable position in the wheel arch (do not open the brake hydraulic system!).

- Remove the brake disc fir better accessibility if necessary.

- Use > VAS 6926 - puller set
to press the drive shaft pin out by max. > Length 10 mm + 5 mm
--. When doing this, observe drive shaft clearance on the halfshaft flange.
Press out drive shaft
- Remove wheel bearing housing from the spring strut.

Spring strut screws are tensioned. Use a suitable lift with a rubber base.
- Remove tie rod (toe control arm) at the wheel bearing housing.

- Secure the wheel bearing housing and drive shift assembly to prevent it from falling down, helper required
Remove the screws -1, 2- of the two upper control arms from the inside of the rear axle carrier. Replace threaded connection.
Threading on inner control arms
- Loosen the lower wishbone -2-
at the point where it is secured to the wheel bearing housing -1-
. Replace threaded connection.
Screws on lower trailing arm
- Use a suitable jack to lower and carefully set the wheel bearing housing and drive shaft down.
- Unscrew and replace axle nut on the outer drive shaft.
- Pull the drive shaft -1-
fully out of the wheel bearing housing -2-

) and set it aside.
