Installing Rear Wheel Bearing Housing
- Risk of crushing
- Risk of damage to components
- Wear personal protective gear.
- Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original.
Dimension 1 - centre of wheel to lower edge of wing (rear axle shown)
Information
- All screws and threaded joints on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels of the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Measurement -1
from the lower edge of the wing to the middle of the vehicle axle corresponds to vehicle position. The current height values can be found in
> 4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT
Always observe the following points!
- On vehicles with air springs, the respective air spring must be bled using the Porsche System Tester.
- Screws and nuts are Geomet-coated and must not be greased.
Information
Before installing the shaft, replace the lock ring (circlip) on the shaft as well as the shaft sealing ring n the final drive
> 392255 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SEALING RING FOR HALFSHAFT FLANGE (WITHOUT DIFFERENTIAL LOCK)
Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the shaft into the final drive.
- The inner end of the drive shall must be held with both hands at the joint and inserted into the rear axle differential with a quick jerk. The outer joint must be held by a second mechanic in order to prevent damage.
- Check that the joint is seated correctly in the rear axle differential: Hold the joint with both hands and pull outwards.
- Visually check that the plastic protective rings are flush on the rear axle differential.
- Grease the splines with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste and fit the drive shaft -1-
into the wheel bearing housing -2-A-
. When doing this, press the inner joint together fully.

Information
- Pull in the drive shaft as far as it will go using the > T10206 - fitting tool .
- Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
- Grease contact-face ring of axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste. Fit new axle nut.
- After you have pulled the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing, it still needs to be pre-tightened to the specified tightening torque.
Pull in drive shaft
- 4.1
In the 1st step, "before installation" tighten drive shaft to > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)
--.
Place the wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft and tool on the floor (do not damage brake cover plate) and pull in the drive shaft. A helper is required! -Arrow- .
- 4.2 The 2nd tightening step is performed when the wheel bearing housing is installed in the "Subsequent work" section.
- 4.1
In the 1st step, "before installation" tighten drive shaft to > Tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.)
--.
- Left side: Replace the protective plastic ring that was irreparably damaged during removal.
- Use a new sealing ring in the rear axle-differential and a new protective ring and circlip on the drive shaft.
- Fit the wheel bearing housing (2nd mechanic required). First, fit the drive shaft on the rear-axle differential housing with a quick, strong blow.
To make installation easier, raise the wheel mount slightly with a universal vehicle lift! Use a rubber pad to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! > Lifting wheel bearing housing (example)

- Fit new bolts -1, 2-
on the inside of the two upper, wishbones.

Inner control arm bolts
- Fit lower control arm -2-
on the wheel bearing housing with new bolt -1-
.
