Removing Rear Axle

Information 

When working on the exhaust system, rear axle and vibration dampers, position the mounting frame correctly on the lifting platform and carefully remove the rear axle housing. Watch out for falling parts when removing and installing components on the mounting frame.

1. Mark the position of the cardan shaft with respect to the rear final drive.

2. Press the cardan shaft off the rear final drive pin using a mounting lever -A-  .

3. Loosen centre bearing holder -1-  and tie up the cardan shaft in the cardan tunnel.

4. For vehicles with PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - anti-roll stabilisation): 

   On vehicles with PDCC, the lines (pressure line, return line) at the PDCC valve block must be disconnected from rear axle to front axle. Unclip them if necessary. Allow fluid to flow into a suitable drip pan.

5. For installation, it is a good idea to mark the installation position of the rear axle housing diagonally in at least two places on the body. To do this, place the marks vertically with respect to the floor of the body using a felt-tip pen (e.g. mark along the rear axle housing mount with the pen). > Marking (example)

6. Loosen the brake calliper at the wheel carrier and tie it up in the wheel housing with a tie-wrap.
7. Disengage and disconnect wire harness for wheel carrier at the body in the wheel housing -1-  .

8. Disconnect cable plug -3-  on level sensor.

   Lifting wheel bearing housing (example)

   • Spring strut screws are tensioned. Use a suitable lift with rubber base. 
9. Remove spring strut at the wheel carrier. Let connecting link hang to the side.
10. Position assembly frame correctly on the lifting platform > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  .

11. Guide it into the jacking points provided for this purpose -arrows-  . The -arrows-  show the jacking points for the assembly frame in the rear axle housing.

12. Unscrew four fastening screws -arrows-  and lower the chassis subframe. Check that all components have sufficient clearance.
