Replacing Lower Trailing-Arm Bearings

WARNING: Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press 
  • Risk of squashing 

    → Read specific safety information for the press.

    → Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.

WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
  • Risk of crushing 
  • Risk of damage to components 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

Trailing arm with axle bearing

  1. The pressure pieces and the > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder  are used for pressing in and out. Screw a suitable attachment from > T10205 - assembly tool set  into the hydraulic press. Screw a suitable > T10230 - Assembly tool  onto the threaded rod and position the required attachment from > T10205 - assembly tool set  while pressing out and in. Nut and washer from assembly fixture T10230 are screwed onto the opposite end of the threaded rod.

    When using the pressure pieces, the direction arrow shows the direction for pressing the rubber-metal mounts in or out on the trailing arm.

  2. Before pressing out the bearing -1-  , mark the installation position using a suitable marker -A-  .

    A marking must be made for this purpose in the cut-out -2-  for the bearing using a suitable marker to mark the trailing arm -3-  (-A-  ).

    The following pressure pieces and nuts are required for bearing -1-  :

    • T10230/2- -1- 
    • T10230/7--2- 
    • T10230/15--3- 
    • T10230/51 - -4- 
    • Washer - -5- 
    • Nut - -6-

    Pressing in: 

    When pressing in the bearing -1-  , pay close attention to the installation position marking -A-  . The cut-out -2-  for the bearing must be pointing to the marking -A-  on the trailing arm -3-  .

  3. Bearing -2-  consists of the axle bearing -1-  and lock -2-  .

    Before pressing out the bearing, check the alignment by checking the position of the cut-outs. > Alignment of bearing 2

    Pressing out: 

    Use > T10230/59 - extractor  for pressing out the lock.

    Fit the extractor -1-  on the lock -2-  .

    Tighten adjusting screw -3-  until the extractor is fitted securely.

    Tighten adjusting screw -4-  to prevent the tool from tilting.

    Fit attachment part -1-  of the extractor close to the cut-out for the lock.

    Tighten adjusting screw -2-  until the lock is loosened completely.

    Pressing in: 

    Before pressing in the bearing, always check the alignment of the bearing! > Alignment of bearing 2

    To ensure that the lock is fitted at the correct position on the bearing, the lock must be crimped with the bearing.

    The following pressure pieces are required for crimping:

    IMPORTANT: Check alignment of pressure pieces and nuts!
