Installing Front-Axle Carrier

Dimension 1 - centre of wheel to lower edge of wing (rear axle shown)

  1. Position the -Front-axle carrier-  on the mounting frame.

  2. Position the lifting platform -1-  on the markings -A-  .

  3. Position the front-axle carrier with steering, final drive and anti-roll bar back in its original, marked installation position and be careful not to damage adjacent parts.
  4. Tighten the four fastening screws -arrows-  .

    Threaded connection securing chassis subframe to body (front): > Initial tightening 120 (89 ftlb.) Nm  -- > Final tightening + 180°  --

    Fastening screws on front-axle carrier

  5. Remove the lifting platform with assembly frame.
  6. Fit connecting link -2-  on the anti-roll bar -3-  and tighten the fastening screw. > Tightening torque 110 (81.5 ftlb.) Nm  --

  7. Press the lower trailing arm into the mounting points on the front-axle carrier -A-  .

  8. Fit eccentric screws -1-  .

    Marking on eccentric screws

    1. 8.1  Carefully lift the wheel bearing housing using a suitable lift so that the dust bellows on the steering is not damaged by the eccentric screws -1-  .
    2. 8.2  Position eccentric screws -1-  so that the markings -A, B-  are aligned.
    3. 8.3  Tighten lock nuts. > Tightening torque 170 (126 ftlb.) Nm  --
  9. Tighten fastening screws -1  securing drive shaft to transmission.

    Observe specified tightening torque: 

    The following applies for fastening screw M8 x 48: > Initial tightening 20 (15 ftlb.) Nm  -- > Final tightening + 90°  --

    The following applies for fastening screw M10 x 52: > Initial tightening 50 (37 ftlb.) Nm  -- > Final tightening +90°  --

  10. Fit the steering column at the steering gear.

    > 481519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING STEERING COLUMN

    Use a new clamping screw.

    Installing steering column

    1. 10.1  Press the steering column -2-  onto the steering gear -3-  (-A-  ).
    2. 10.2  Insert a new clamping screw -1-  and tighten without tension. > Initial tightening 20 (15 ftlb.) Nm  -- > Final tightening + 90°  --
  11. Position hydraulic line (intake pipe) -2-  and fit the clamp -1-  .

  12. For vehicles with "DGC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - anti-roll stabilization): 

    Route hydraulic line -1-  (pressure line) without tension and fit it on the steering gear -2-  . > Tightening torque 32 (24 ftlb.) Nm +/- 4 (3 ftlb.) Nm  --

  13. For vehicles with PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - anti-roll stabilization): 

    Fit lines -1,_3-  at the flow divider -2-  and at the front right side member.

    Cap screws on flow divider: > Tightening torque 28 Nm (20.7 ftlb.) +/- 4 Nm (3 ftlb.)  --

    Banjo bolt on flow divider: > Tightening torque 20 Nm (14.8 ftlb.) + 45°  --

    Cap screws: > Tightening torque 28 Nm (20.7 ftlb.) +/- 4 Nm (3 ftlb.)  --

  14. For vehicles with PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - anti-roll stabilization): 

    Fit lines -1, 2-  at the connection point and valve block.

    Cap screw: > Tightening torque 28 Nm (20.7 ftlb.) +/- 4 Nm (3 ftlb.)  --

    Line to valve block: > Tightening torque 28 Nm (20.7 ftlb.)  --

    Line to valve block: > Tightening torque 28 Nm (20.7 ftlb.)  --

  15. For vehicles without PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - anti-roll stabilization): 

    Fit hydraulic line -1-  (pressure line) at the steering gear -2-  . > Tightening torque 32 (24 ftlb.) Nm +/- 4 (3 ftlb.) Nm  --

  16. For vehicles without PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - anti-roll stabilization): 

    Fit holder -1-  on final drive.

  17. For vehicles without PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - anti-roll stabilization): 

    Replace tie-wrap -2-  and fit pressure line on steering gear.

  18. Position heat shield -2-  on the steering gear and tighten fastening screws. > Tightening torque 9 (6.5 ftlb.) 

    Nm.  --

  19. Fit the tie rod on the wheel bearing housing.

    > 487919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TIE ROD

  20. > VW552 - Spring tensioner-1- can now be removed from the upper trailing arm -2-  .
