Assembling Rear Spring Strut
- Risk of squashing or bruising
→ Do not reach into the danger area.
→ Relieve the tension on components before starting work.
→ Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.
Information
- When installing new components, always check that they are assigned correctly.
- Coil springs are only available in pairs .
- Clamp the spring strut in a suitable clamping block (tensioning device for MacPherson spring struts). Alternatively, the spring clamp can also be held in a retaining device.
- Slide the bellows/additional spring assembly onto the piston rod.
- Push the pretensioned coil spring onto the vibration damper so that the end of the coil spring rests against the stop of the spring plate. Fit the stop plate -7- at the correct position.
- Fit spring plate (compensating part) with support ring and spring strut mount. Position the support ring correctly. The cut-outs in the support ring must be positioned between the collars of the three fastening pins -arrows- .
- Position the spring strut mount. On PASM spring struts, also align the stop plate.
- 5.1. Fit stop plate at the correct position (curved side up) and screw a new lock nut onto the piston rod (do not tighten fully yet).
- 5.2. The spring strut mount is positioned correctly if the fastening pin on the sloping supporting mount part is flush with the retaining bracket on the damper tube → Fig 3 .
- 5.3. Then, on PASM spring struts, align the stop plate with the spring strut mount.
In other words: there are four depressions in the spring strut mount bearing location. The two cut-outs on the stop plate must be positioned over the two depressions on the spring strut mount.
- Tighten lock nut on the piston rod to 80 Nm/59 ftlb. (conventional and PASM spring struts).
Use socket-wrench insert 9630/2 to do this on conversional spring struts. On PASM spring struts, use a suitable socket-wrench insert, e.g. socket-wrench insert for ATF temp. switch assembly Nr.18 .
When tightening the nut, counter at the piston rod (hexagon socket) or at the two grooves (cut-outs) on the stop plate (for PASM spring struts).
Tools required: For PASM spring struts, use a retaining tool 9630/1 and for conventional spring struts, use a counter-hold tool 9630 .
