Removing Rear Drive Shaft

  1. Release and unclip the connector for the brake pad wear indicator -A-  and remove it from the holder -B-  .

  2. Loosen fastening screw -1-  on the holder for the brake pad wear indicator cable and brake line from the brake calliper.

    NOTE: Removing/fitting wheels
    • Risk of damage to (ceramic) brake discs

    → Carefully guide the wheel towards the wheel hub, thereby preventing any heavy impact on the (ceramic) brake disc.

  3. Evenly set back brake pads a little using water pump pliers.

    Information 

    • Never use an impact bolter to loosen and tighten the brake calliper on the wheel bearing housing. 
  4. Loosen fastening screws on the brake calliper -arrows-  and remove brake calliper from the wheel carrier.

  5. Suspend the brake calliper at a suitable position in the wheel housing (do not open the brake hydraulic system!).
  6. Disconnect push-on connector -1-  and detach bracket -2-  from the wheel carrier.

  7. Disengage linkage -1-  for the level sensor at the ball pin -2-  .

  8. Puller set Nr.87-1 Pos.1 -1-  must be fitted on the brake disc.

  9. Support wheel carrier using a suitable lever -2-  on the outside in order to prevent the wheel carrier from tipping over.

  10. Screw in spindle -4- → Control value: +10 mm  (-arrow-  ).
  11. Unscrew and remove fastening screws -3-  for the upper trailing arms and tie rod.
  12. Lower the lever -2-  slowly.
    1. 12.1. While tilting the wheel carrier with the spindle -4-  , press the drive shaft back as far as required until it can be removed from the hub.
  13. Remove lever -2-  .
  14. Tilt wheel carrier -1-  downwards. Get a second fitter to hold the drive shaft -2-  .

  15. Protect drive shaft using a suitable plastic tube and carefully set it down on the chassis subframe while performing the following work.

  16. Left side: Break off protective plastic ring -1-  with a screwdriver.

  17. Lever the drive shaft out of the rear-axle transmission housing using two mounting levers, for example.
    IMPORTANT: Hold the drive shaft!  In the event of unfavorable tolerances, the drive shaft might slip out.
