Removing Front Drive Shaft
- Disconnect plug coupling for brake-pad wear indicator -1- and detach it from the holder -2- .
- Detach holder for brake line and wear indicator on the wheel carrier -arrow- .
- Disconnect connector for speed sensor. → rpm sensor connector
- Remove brake calliper and hang it in the wheel housing.
- 4.1. Loosen fastening screws -arrows- on the brake calliper, but do not remove the brake line. (Do not open the brake system!)
- 4.2. Hang the brake calliper at a suitable position in the wheel housing.
- Loosen fastening screws -arrows- and remove brake disc.
- Use puller set Nr.87-1 Pos.1 to push (press) the drive shaft peg into the wheel hub by a maximum of → Control value: +10 mm . → Pressing in drive shaft Leave the puller fitted (this will make removal easier!).
- Remove air guide -1- on the lower trailing arm.

WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components
→ Wear personal protective gear.
→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
Secure upper trailing arm with the spring compressor VW 552 (pre-tension slightly). This must be done immediately before loosening the spring strut from the lower trailing arm. This prevents damage to the ball joint on the upper trailing arm as a result of the weight of the wheel bearing housing.
- Secure spring compressor VW 552 at the top. → Securing spring compressor on front axle, top
- Secure spring compressor VW 552 at the bottom. → Securing spring compressor on front axle, bottom
- Remove fastening screw for lower spring strut.
- 9.1. Remove fastening screw for lower spring strut -arrows- .
- 9.2. To do this, use a suitable lift -lift with rubber base- (to prevent slipping) to raise the wheel carrier so that the screw can be unscrewed easily. (Secure spring compressor VW 552 to prevent it from falling down!).
- Press tie-rod ball -1-
off the wheel bearing housing.
- 10.1. Loosen fastening nut -3- (do not remove completely). When doing this, leave lock nut flush on the ball pin so as not to damage the thread.
- 10.2. Position the press-out tool T10187 -2- over the tie-rod ball -1- and fit on the fastening nut -3- .
- 10.3. Screw in hexagon on the press-out tool T10187 until the tie-rod ball -1- becomes detached from the cone.
- 10.4. Remove fastening nut -3- and take tie-rod ball out of the cone.
- Press lower trailing arm off the wheel bearing housing.
- 11.1. Loosen fastening nut (do not remove completely). When doing this, leave lock nut flush on the ball pin so as not to damage the thread.
- 11.2. Position the press-out tool T10187 -2- over the ball joint and fit on the fastening nut.
- 11.3. Screw in hexagon on the press-out tool T10187 until the ball joint -1- becomes detached from the cone.
- Press upper trailing arm -1-
off the wheel bearing housing.
- 12.1. Secure the wheel bearing housing to prevent it from falling down (second mechanic required).
- 12.2. Loosen fastening nut -1- (do not remove completely). When doing this, leave lock nut flush on the ball pin so as not to damage the thread.
- 12.3. Position the press-out tool T40010 over the ball joint and fit on the fastening nut.
- 12.4. Screw in hexagon on the press-out tool T40010 until the ball joint becomes detached from the cone.
- Secure the wheel bearing housing to prevent it from falling down with the help of a second mechanic.IMPORTANT: Always hold the drive shaft!
In the event of unfavorable tolerances, the drive shaft might slip out.
- Unscrew fastening nut completely from the lower ball joint and carefully remove wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft.
- Use puller set Nr.87-1 Pos.1 to press the drive shaft out of the wheel hub. → Pressing in drive shaft
