Removing Rear Wheel Bearing Housing

Information
- To prevent damage to the drive shaft, suspension subframe or transmission flange, slide a protective tube (shop-made) over the drive shaft.
Wheel bearing housing with upper control arms
- Left side only: Break off and remove protective plastic ring -1-
with a screwdriver. This ensures accessibility of the contact surfaces for the assembly levers in the following point.

- Position two mounting levers and carefully press the drive shaft -1-
outwards.

- Release central connector -1-
from the ABS wire harness at the body -a-
and disconnect it -A-
.
Wheel bearing housing wiring harness plug connection
- Unclip ABS wire harness mounting -2- at the body -B- .
- Remove the brake calliper from the wheel bearing housing and suspend it at a suitable position in the wheel arch (do not open the brake hydraulic system!).

- Remove the brake disc for better accessibility if necessary.

- Use > VAS 6926 - puller set
to press the drive shaft pin out by max. > Length 10 mm + 5 mm
. When doing this, observe drive shaft clearance on the halfshaft flange.

- Remove the wheel bearing housing from the spring strut.

- 8.1 The spring strut screws are under tension. Use a suitable lift with a rubber base. > Spring strut support (shown as an example)
- 8.2 Carefully press the spring strut downwards out of the wheel bearing housing.
- 8.3 Do not damage the brake cover plate!
- Remove the tie rod (toe control arm) at the wheel bearing housing.

- Secure the wheel bearing housing and drive shaft assembly to prevent it from falling (2nd mechanic required)
Remove the screws -1, 2- of the two upper control arms from the inside of the rear axle carrier.

- Loosen the lower control arm -2-
where it is fastened to the wheel bearing housing -1-
.
Screws on lower axle guide (shown as an example)
- Use a suitable jack to lower and carefully set the wheel bearing housing and drive shaft down.
- Pull the drive shaft -1-
fully out of the wheel bearing housing -2-
