Removing The Front Wheel Bearing Housing

  • Risk of crushing 
  • Risk of damage to components 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

Wheel bearing housing

1  Wheel hub
2  Brake disc
3  Cover plate
4  Wheel bearing housing (wheel carrier)
  1. Unscrew screws -1,_2-  for holder -3, 4-  for hydraulic lines.

    1. 1.1  Loosen the holder at the wheel bearing housing -5-  .
  2. Release cable plug -1-  for the speed sensor on the wheel bearing housing -a-  and it pull off -A ;  .

  3. Loosen the brake calliper and suspend it at a suitable position in the wheel arch (do not open the brake hydraulics!).

    1. 3.1  Also protect the brake calliper (for example with a cloth or suitable rubber mat) to prevent damage to the paintwork.
  4. Remove brake disc.

  5. Secure the upper trailing arm -2-  with the > VW552 - spring compressor-1-  .

    1. 5.1  Engage the spring tensioner in the top opening of the wheel housing and in the upper trailing arm and tighten it slightly to avoid damaging the upper ball joint -3-  .
  6. Use the > VAS 6926 - puller set  to push out the drive shaft peg by a maximum 10 to 15 mm > Pressing out drive shaft.

    1. 6.1  Check drive shaft clearance on the halfshaft flange while doing this.
  7. Loosen the lock nut -1-  on the bottom ball joint -2-.

    1. 7.1  Only unscrew the lock nut until it is flush with the ball pin, to prevent damage to the ball pin -3-  .
  8. Fit the > T10444 - ball joint puller  , -4-  over the ball joint -2-  and ball pin -3-  and carefully push the ball joint out of the trailing arm -5-  .
    1. 8.1 Make sure not to damage the rubber boot on the ball joint. 
  9. Press out the tie rod on the wheel bearing housing using > T10187 - ball joint puller  . > Pressing off tie rod

  10. Secure the wheel bearing housing to prevent it from falling down (help required).
  11. Press out the upper ball joint on the wishbone using the >T10187 - ball joint puller  .
  12. Pull the wheel bearing housing out of the lower ball joint and remove it.
