Installing Front Drive Shaft

Dimension 1 - centre of wheel to lower edge of wing (rear axle shown)

• All screws and threaded joints on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Measurement -1- from the lower edge of the wing to the middle of the vehicle axle corresponds to vehicle position. The current height values can be found in

  . Always observe the following points! 

• On vehicles with air springs, the respective air spring must be bled using the Porsche System Tester. 

  > WM, 4301IN BLEEDING AND FILLING THE LEVELLING SYSTEM

• Screws and nuts are Geomet-coated and must not be greased.

1. Grease the drive shaft splines with a little Optimoly TA aluminum paste and guide it into the wheel bearing housing. When doing this, press the inner joint together fully.
   1. 1.1  One mechanic must carefully pull the upper wheel bearing housing out and turn the steering.
   2. 1.2  The second mechanic must carefully insert the drive shaft.

      Fitting tool T10206 (shown as an example)

      • Pull in the drive shaft as far as it will go using the > T10206 -fitting tool  .
2. Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
3. Fit inner section of drive shaft on the transmission flange
4. Fit fastening screws -1-  for securing drive shaft to transmission.

   Observe the specified tightening torque: 

   The following applies for fastening screw M10 x 52: > Initial tightening 50 (37 ftlb.) Nm  -- > Final tightening + 90°  --

   The following applies for fastening screw M8 x 48: > Initial tightening 20 (15 ftlb.) Nm  -- > Final tightening + 90°  --

5. Grease the mounting-face ring of the axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminum paste.
6. Tighten the axle nut slightly to prevent the shaft from slipping out.
7. Counter with a > 9546 - screwdriver when tightening the ball joints if necessary.
8. Install tie rod on the wheel bearing housing.

9. Install ball joint of the upper trailing arm on the wheel bearing housing.

   >401519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING UPPER TRAILING ARM 

10. Use a suitable jack -4-  to raise the trailing arm and remove > VW552 - Spring tensioner-1 -  from the upper trailing arm -2-  .

11. Raise the axle support -1-  as far as required until the fastening screw -2-  slides easily through the spring strut -3-  and axle support.

    Tighten fastening screw.

12. Install brake disc.

    > 465019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT BRAKE DISC

    > 465119 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT BRAKE DISC (PCCB)

13. Install brake calliper.

    > 473919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT BRAKE CALLIPER

    > 473919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT BRAKE CALLIPER (PCCB)

14. Plug in electric plug connection -1  for the speed sensor on the wheel bearing housing -A-  and lock it -a-  .

15. Fit the holders -1, 2-  for the hydraulic lines on the wheel bearing housing -3-  .
