Removing Engine From Transmission

Information 

• When removing the engine, ensure that the torque converter in the automatic transmission does not slip out of the transmission. 
• Keep the torque converter pressed in position using a screwdriver when removing the engine. 

Information 

• Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle or a similar component. 
• Naturally, some steps also have to be performed on the opposite side of the vehicle as well.

Engine/transmission assembly 

1. Remove catalytic converter.

   > WM 267319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING (MAIN) CATALYTIC CONVERTER (CAYENNE S, CAYENNE TURBO, CAYENNE GTS & CAYENNE TURBO S)

2. Unscrew and remove fastening screws -1-  for the coolant line holder -2-  and bend holder to one side.

3. Loosen clamps -1-  and disconnect coolant hoses -2-  on the left of the transmission.
   1. Collect emerging coolant.
   2. Close off openings using suitable stoppers.

4. Remove ATF line -1-  at the top.
   1. Unscrew screws -2-  on the cylinder head.
   2. Unscrew screw -3-  on the oil cooler -4-  .
   3. Collect emerging ATF.
   4. Close off openings using suitable stoppers.

5. Remove ATF line -1-  at the bottom.
   1. Unscrew screw -2-  on the bracket -3-  for the right engine mount.
   2. Unscrew screw -4-  .
   3. Unscrew screw -5-  on the oil cooler -6-  and disconnect ATF line
   4. Guide out ATF line.
   5. Collect emerging ATF.
   6. Close off openings using suitable stoppers.

6. Disconnect coolant hoses.
   1. Loosen clamp -1-  and pull off coolant line -2-  .
   2. Collect emerging coolant.
   3. Close off openings using suitable stoppers.
   4. Disconnect coolant hoses -3-  and -4-  from the holder.
   5. Disconnect vacuum line -5-  and release it from the holder -6-  .

7. Loosen clamp -1-  for the coolant hose -2-  to the ATF heat exchanger on the right and pull the hose down off the connection piece.

8. Unclip the hose -1-  for the transmission vent from the holder -2-  .

9. Loosen hydraulic lines -1-  and -2-  at the steering gear.
   1. Unscrew screw -3-  and loosen holding clamp -4-  .
   2. Unscrew screw -5-  and disconnect line -1-  from the steering gear.
   3. Loosen screw -6-  , disconnect line -2-  from the steering gear and replace seals -7-  .
   4. Collect emerging hydraulic oil.
   5. Close off openings using suitable stoppers.

10. Loosen fastening screws -1-  for the holders -2-  of the left and right primary catalytic converters -3-  .

11. Loosen fastening screws -1-  on the left and right for the rear holders -2-  for the catalytic converters on the transmission.

12. Remove the catalytic converters and set them aside.
13. Remove stopper -1-  used to seal the converter assembly opening.

14. Remove converter screws. To do this, read and follow the next steps.

    > WM 325019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TORQUE CONVERTER (CAYENNE, CAYENNE GTS, CAYENNE TURBO S, CAYENNE S, CAYENNE S E-HYBRID, CAYENNE TURBO, CAYENNE (3.0))

15. Turn crankshaft clockwise using special tool > 9714 - Socket wrench insert  .
16. Insert special tool > 9595 - Dowel pins  into the front bore on the converter bell housing -arrow-  and hold upwards with slight pressure until it engages when the crankshaft is turned.

17. Position special tool > 9688 - Insert bit  on the converter screw through the opening in the engine block and connect bit snap-on head and special tool > 9687 - Insert  one after the other.

18. Remove special tool > 9595 - Dowel pins  before loosening the converter screws.
19. Loosen and unscrew converter screw.
20. Complete the steps described above for the other five screws.
21. Secure engine to the lifting tackle and to the workshop crane >.

22. Secure the transmission using a suitable tool, e.g. a wooden block, to prevent it from tilting out of position.

23. Lift the engine/transmission unit until the four screws on the two engine mounts can be removed.

24. Slowly lower the engine/transmission unit onto the wooden block. The engine is still suspended securely on the workshop crane.
25. Loosen the fastening screws -1-  used to secure the transmission to the engine.

26. Remove engine from transmission. Press the converter off the drive plate using a screwdriver if necessary.
27. Remove the engine from the transmission at the lifting crane.

    WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down

    • Risk of squashing or crushing

    
    →Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
28. Secure the transmission to the transmission cross member using a piece of wire or cable to prevent it from tipping over (transmission immediately tips to one side when removing the engine because of the transfer gear).
