Central Bolts: Different Procedure For Wheel Alignment

On vehicles (wheels -3-  ) with central bolts -2-  , the procedure for attaching measured-value pickups or measuring reflectors is different to the usual procedure, which involves using self-centring quick-clamping holders.

Use → WE1371 Wheel-alignment adapter for wheels with central lock  to secure the measured-value pickups or measuring reflectors on the wheels. The wheel-alignment adapters (central adapters) -1-  are secured to the lockable wheel bolt on the central bolt (M8 thread) together with the spacer rings -2-  . Use the supplied long screws -4-  for this. Tightening torque: max. 15 Nm/11 ftlb.

  1. 4 central adapters for the 911 GT3, 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera GTS
  2. 4 spacer rings for the 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera GTS (in combination with -1-  ).
  3. 4 screws (toggles)
  4. 4 fastening screws (M8 x 55) for central adapter -1-  when used with spacer ring -2-  . (Tightening torque: 15 Nm/11 ftlb.)
  5. 4 fastening screws (M8 x 40) for central adapter -1-  when used without spacer ring -2-  . (Tightening torque: 15 Nm/11 ftlb.)

Information on using the central wheel-alignment adapters WE 1371 on the 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera GTS

  1. Contact surface (on wheel) on the 911 GT3 for the central adapter -Nr. 1-  (not on the 911 Turbo or 911 Carrera GTS)
  2. Contact surface (on wheel bolt) for spacer ring -Nr. 2-  in conjunction with the central adapter -Nr. 1- on the 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera GTS
Fig 3: Identifying Adapter Contact Surface

On the 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera GTS  , there is no contact surface on the wheel (outside of the wheel bolt) -1-  . For this reason, central adapters No. 1, together with spacer ring No. 2, are positioned on the wheel bolt surface -2-  on the 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera GTS.

The supplied long M8 screws must be used for securing the adapters to the lockable wheel bolt.

Because the adapters are fitted on the surface of the wheel bolt -2-, rim runout compensation is required on the 911 Turbo and 911 Carrera GTS (status as at 21.10.2010).

Reason:  The surface of the central bolt -2-  is not always parallel to the contact surface of the wheel with respect to the wheel hub due to all the possible tolerances of all central lock components.

  1. Fit measured-value pickups or measuring reflectors, in conjunction with the central adapters and sealing rings (WE 1371), on the wheels  .

All contact surfaces (central adapters and sealing rings on the wheel-bolt surfaces) must be clean and flat. Always check the flat surfaces in particular before fitting the central adapters.

    1. 1.1. Carefully lever the crested hub cap out using a small screwdriver.

      1. 1.1.1. Stick adhesive tape on the screwdriver if necessary to ensure that the screwdriver does not scratch the surface of the central bolt.
      2. 1.1.2. Guide the screwdriver deeply into the opening groove and then carefully lift up the cap.

Do not turn the screwdriver to the left or right while doing this!

    2. 1.2. Fit the central adapter -1-  and spacer ring -2-  on the wheel (on the M8 thread in the middle of the lockable wheel bolt). All contact surfaces (central adapter and sealing rings on the wheel-bolt surfaces) must be perfectly clean and flat.

Position the central adapter, fit the long fastening screw (M8 x 55) and tighten hand-tight. (Tightening torque: max. 15 Nm/11 ftlb.).

When tightening the screw, hold the adapter/sealing ring -1 and 2-  securely (to prevent it from turning) so as not to damage the top of the wheel bolt.

    3. 1.3. Do the same on the other wheels (to fit the remaining central adapters).
    4. 1.4. Fit measured-value pickups -5-  or measuring reflectors, possibly with spoiler adapters (50/100 mm long) -4-  , on the central adapters -1-  .

  2. Perform rim runout compensation in accordance with the wheel-alignment analyzer.

If rim runout compensation does not involve sliding the wheels forward and back  , but involves turning the wheels with the vehicle raised, please observe the following:

    • Before raising the vehicle (or the relevant axle), measure the vehicle height at the front and rear (empty weight of vehicle according to DIN 70020 means the vehicle is in ready-to-drive condition with full tank and including tools but without driver or additional weights).
    • After lowering the vehicle, make sure to set the same vehicle height that was set before you raised the vehicle.
    • To do this, compress the vehicle springs a number of times at the front and rear axle or set the vehicle to the required position using a hydraulic weight simulator.
  3. Following wheel alignment, check or ensure that the lockable wheel bolt is locked -(wheel bolt secured)-. Do not fit the crested hub cap until you have done this  .
    1. 3.1. Remove the wheel-alignment adapter and check that the locking pin on the lockable wheel bolt is still engaged in the central bolt  .

If the locking pin -1-  is still at the rear position and has not yet engaged in the inner toothing of the central bolt after fitting the wheel, the central bolt is still not secured and must be secured manually to prevent it from becoming loose. This applies to both road and race track use.

When the central bolt is secured, the locking pin -1-  ends flush with the inner toothing of the central bolt.

If the locking pin is still at the rear position, the pin must be turned to the left and right using a 1/2-inch square extension until it engages in the central bolt -(wheel bolt secured)-  .

Never drive the vehicle when the locking pin is not engaged (risk of damage and danger of accidents).

    2. 3.2. Fit the crested hub cap -1-  into the central bolt so that the positioning finger is in the opening groove. Then press the cap in until it is seated securely. Grease the rubber ring on the cap lightly beforehand if necessary.
