Removing Front Drive Shaft

WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly
  • Risk of squashing

→ Wear personal protective gear.

→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

  1. Using universal drive shaft/wheel hub puller as of model '86 Nr.87-1,  push (press) peg into the wheel hub. → Insertion length: 20 mm+5 mm

  2. Unscrew the plastic nuts -arrows-  on the front wheel housing liner and insert spring tensioner VW 552  into the upper opening of the wheel housing (double panel) and leave it hanging.

  3. Release lower spring strut. In other words: carefully raise the axle strut using a suitable lift so that the fastening pins for the lower spring strut can be removed easily. Use a -lift with rubber base-  in order to prevent slipping.

  4. Remove the lower connecting rod -arrow-  .

  5. Secure the -upper axle strut-  with the spring tensioner VW 552  (vehicle in illustration with conventional suspension) to prevent damage to the top ball joint. In other words: engage the -spring tensioner-  on the axle strut and pre-tension with the wing nut. The lift can now be removed.

  6. Push protection over the drive shaft, loosen the drive shaft at the transmission and set it down carefully.
  7. Press out tie rod on wheel carrier with press-out tool T10187  . → see Fig 6 When pressing out, screw lock nut on flush (protects the ball joint thread).

  8. Unclip cable for wear monitor and release holder on wheel carrier.
  9. Disconnect the cable on the ABS sensor.
  10. Press out wheel carrier at the top with press-out tool T10187.  → see Fig 7 When pressing out, screw lock nut on flush (protects the ball joint thread).

  11. One mechanic must carefully pull upper wheel carrier out and turn the steering. The second mechanic must carefully pull out the drive shaft.
