Removing front side member (section)

Installation Location:

1. Remove front closing panel. → 501055 Replacing end plate - section on "Removing" 

NOTE: If you are sure there has been no deformation of the wheel housing and floor front section structure, the cuts can be made without removing the wheel housing and floor front section for the following repair work.

2. Remove front wheel housing (section). → 507455 Replacing front wheel housing (section) - section on "Removing" 

3. Remove floor front section. → 502055 Replacing floor front section - removing 

WARNING: Possible separation points on inner front side member 
  • Danger of material damage and injury 
  • Cuts can only be made on the inner front side member at dimension -X= 30 mm-  , in the marked areas -A-  and -B-  in front of the tailored blank (laser weld) -1, 2-  against the direction of travel. See Fig 2.

→ The possible separation points on the inner front side member are 30 mm in front of the tailored blanks (laser weld) against the direction of travel.

4. Determining the cut

4.1. Determine possible cut on the inner front side member at dimension -X= 30 mm-  in front of the tailored blank (laser weld) -1-  . Mark the cut. See Fig 3.

5. Cutting through inner front side member

5.1. Cut through the inner front side member at the marked separation point -A-  using the oscillating body saw. Do not damage internal components when doing this. See Fig 4.

6. Milling off spotwelds

6.1. Mill off spotwelds in area -A-  using a spotweld cutter. See Fig 5.

NOTE: Ensure that the outer side member is offset by dimension X = min. 50 mm  with respect to the inner side member.

7. Determining the cut

7.1. Mark cut on the outer front side member depending on the damage at dimension -X= min. 50 mm-  in front of the inner tailored blank (laser weld) against or in the direction of travel. See Fig 6.

8. Cutting through outer front side member

8.1. Cut through the outer front side member at the marked separation point -A-  using the oscillating body saw. Do not damage internal components when doing this. See Fig 7.

9. Milling off spotwelds

9.1. Mill off spotwelds in areas -A, B, C-  using a spotweld cutter. See Fig 8.
