Knocking

The premature detonation of the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder of a carbureted engine due to compression heating. In addition to return pressure on the still compressing piston, thrust, vibration, noise, wear and decreased performance result. The cause of knocking is probably formation of ignition kernels and intermediate products, which catalyze the combustion process.
