Timing Belt: Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner intake hoses. Remove accessory drive belts. Disconnect cables for throttle, cruise control and automatic transaxle. Remove retainers and clamp on console, and position cable aside. Remove clutch slave cylinder.
- On 4.5L V8, align TDC mark on vibration damper with red indicator on cover. On 4.7L, 5.0L and 5.4L V8, align mark for 45 degrees BTDC on vibration damper with Red needle. Turn crankshaft clockwise. See Fig 2. On 4.5L V8, rotate crankshaft clockwise until timing marks (notches) on camshaft sprockets align with marks cast on camshaft bearing caps.
- On 4.7L, 5.0L and 5.4L V8, lock crankshaft by installing Porsche Tool (9161/1) or equivalent. Secure tool with slave cylinder mounting bolts.
- Remove crankshaft pulley mounting bolt, both pulleys, vibration damper and collar. Remove oil dipstick tube. Remove alternator. Remove left upper and center timing belt covers. Loosen timing belt tensioner. Loosen tensioning roller. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION:
NEVER operate clutch pedal when slave cylinder is removed.
