Timing Belt: Installation
- On 4.5L V8, align TDC mark on vibration damper with Red indicator on cover. On 4.7L, 5.0L and 5.4L V8, align mark for 45 degrees BTDC on vibration damper with Red needle. Turn crankshaft clockwise. See Figure. On 4.5L V8, rotate crankshaft clockwise until timing marks (notches) on camshaft sprockets align with marks cast on camshaft bearing caps.
- Preload belt by hand and install belt on sprockets in order of crankshaft, oil pump, left camshaft, water pump, right camshaft and tension roller. See Figure. Ensure belt and camshaft sprocket teeth match. If necessary, rotate camshaft counterclockwise until teeth match. Tighten timing belt to specification. Rotate engine 2 revolutions and align cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke.
- Check camshaft timing marks for proper alignment and retighten camshaft drive belt. Ensure tester is not turned or pushed during tension measurement. Recheck belt adjustment at least once. Adjust drive belts to proper tension.
NOTE:
Manufacturer indicates sufficient clearance exists so pistons and valves will not collide when crankshaft is turned with camshaft timing belt removed.
