Timing Belt: Adjustment
- With both upper drive belt guards removed, rotate crankshaft (in direction of rotation) and position cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Mark on vibration damper should be in alignment with Red indicator on cover.
- Ensure each camshaft sprocket timing mark is in alignment with mark cast on camshaft bearing cap. Turn engine over 2 more times until TDC is reached again.
- Check timing belt for damage and wear. Pull out lock pin, then completely push out gauge pin (opposite lock pin) on Timing Belt Tension Tester (9201) or equivalent. Move telltale to "0" position on gauge. See Fig 1.
- Slide tension tester onto belt section between tension roller and lower camshaft sprocket. Ensure measuring pin is resting in belt grove. Push tester down on side closer to tensioner, until gauge needle, resting on air pump bracket, engages.
- Read measured valve while keeping tester horizontal to belt and free of tension. Tester must not touch plastic cover. Move telltale to "0" position on gauge.
- Pull out lock pin to disengage gauge needle again. Remove tester from timing belt and read measured value. Correct belt tension if necessary. See TIMING BELT TENSION table. Adjustment screw is located on bottom of engine, at right front side. To adjust, loosen adjustment screw lock nut and turn adjustment screw until tension is correct. Tighten lock nut and turn engine 2 revolutions. Recheck tension adjustment.
