Engine, Manifolds & Cylinder Heads: Engine: Removal
- Disconnect battery ground lead. With vehicle resting on its wheels, carefully remove cross strut (strut is in tension).
- Disconnect hoses for windshield washer and wires for engine compartment light. Disconnect hood strut at bottom, and remove hood.
- Remove air intake hoses and air cleaner. Remove upper air intake section on radiator. Remove engine splash shield. Drain coolant. Remove water drain plugs on left and right side of engine block.
- Remove exhaust pipes on left and right sides from exhaust manifold. Disconnect air injection fittings from exhaust system. Suspend exhaust assembly from vehicle with wire at pipe junction.
- Disconnect ground wire between body and engine. Remove lower air duct section from radiator. Remove ventilation hose from alternator. Disconnect starter wiring. Remove starter wire on steering cross member and pull wire harness forward, toward alternator.
- Remove clutch housing cover. Remove drive plate bolts. Remove clamping sleeve bolt and push back drive plate on central shaft. Pins for TDC sensor must face down to remove engine.
- Remove transaxle bolts. Remove vacuum hose for automatic transaxle cylinder head. Unscrew clutch housing mounting bolts on engine block at top and bottom and push transaxle rearward approximately 1/4".
- Disconnect A/C compressor plug. Remove compressor from bracket and place compressor with connected hoses aside. Remove air pump filter housing.
- Remove coolant hoses from radiator on thermostat housing. Remove ATF and oil cooler hoses on radiator. Use an additional wrench to hold radiator fittings.
- Disconnect electrical connecter from temperature switch on radiator. Remove vent hose from top of radiator. Remove radiator. Remove hose from coolant pipe at front right. Disconnect multiple pin plug and "B+" terminal wire.
- Disconnect vent hose from engine on coolant expansion tank. Disconnect and remove hose between heater valve and engine. Remove fuel line. Disconnect and remove TDC sensor. Remove fuel return line.
- Remove ignition leads from distributor caps. Remove both ignition coils and set aside. Disconnect ground wire in front of right ignition coil on body.
- Remove flushing valve and holder. Remove hose from active carbon cartridge charging valve. Disconnect vacuum hose for EZF control unit. Remove vacuum hose from brake booster.
- Disconnect cables for throttle, cruise control and automatic transaxle. Remove retainers and clamp on console and place cables on outside. Disconnect oil hoses from power steering supply tank. Drain oil and remove tank.
- Remove cover of main fuse/relay panel. Disconnect plugs for oxygen sensor, sensor heating and ignition control unit. Disconnect multiple pin plugs on EZF and LH control units, as well as multiple pin plug on right side of main fuse/relay panel.
- Push rubber electrical harness cover out of holder into engine compartment. Unbolt left and right engine mount bolts at bottom on engine crossmember. Attach Engine Hoist (VW 3033) to engine.
- Place wooden block between central tube and crossmember. Tilt engine forward carefully and lift slightly at same time. Separate engine block and clutch housing.
- Mark and remove pressure hose from power steering pump. Carefully remove engine from vehicle.
