Cylinder Heads & Manifolds: Removal

  1. With engine in vehicle, detach air intake hoses from air cleaner housing and camshaft drive belt cover. Release rubber fasteners, detach air cleaner upper section and air cleaner element. Disconnect carbon canister hose and remove air cleaner lower section mounting bolts. Disconnect multiple pin plug and remove lower section with intake air sensor.
  2. Disconnect Black wire plug, loosen hose clamps and detach hose from auxiliary air regulator-to-air distributor. Remove auxiliary air regulator. Remove vacuum hose between intake manifold and brake booster.
NOTE: The fuel injectors are mounted together on a common fuel distributor rail. Fuel injectors can only be removed as a unit.
  3. Disconnect wiring plugs and fuel injector retaining plates at intake manifolds. Detach all fuel injection lines to fuel injectors (including cold start valve). On automatic transaxle equipped vehicles, remove control module vacuum line.
  4. Loosen upper hose clamp on connector between air distributor and throttle housing. Unbolt intake pipes at intake manifold and remove as a unit with plenum chamber. Remove control unit from air guide housing. Remove vacuum hoses and disconnect throttle cable.
  5. Disconnect microswitches and remove throttle housing. Detach intake manifold. Remove distributor. Remove each camshaft housing assembly. Disconnect exhaust system at exhaust manifolds. Remove cylinder head bolts, in reverse of tightening sequence, and carefully remove cylinder heads from block.
