Cylinder Heads & Manifolds: Installation
- When installing cylinder head gaskets, note left and right head gaskets differ. Arrow faces forward and "TOP/OBEN" faces up.NOTE: Improved cylinder head gaskets were introduced into production in 1986. They can be identified by their Brown color. Earlier gaskets were Gray in color.
- Porsche uses the "Torque Angle Tightening" method to tighten cylinder heads. Two types of cylinder head fasteners were installed on 1986 928's. Cars produced prior to April were equipped with Gold colored studs. Cars produced after April have removable head bolts.
- The Gold studs with nuts require a 4 step tightening sequence. Step 1: tighten to 180 INCH lbs. (20 N.m). Step 2: tighten all nuts 90 degrees (1/4 turn). Step 3: tighten another 90 degrees. Step 4: tighten an additional 90 degrees. See Fig 1.
- Engines equipped with cylinder head bolts require a 3 step tightening sequence. Step 1: Tighten all bolts to 180 INCH lbs. 20 N.m). Step 2: tighten all bolts 90 degrees (1/4 turn). Step 3: Tighten all bolts an additional 90 degrees.
- When installing cylinder head nuts and washers, DO NOT use any lubricant between the cylinder head and washer. Lubricate threads, head bolts and nut contact surfaces with high temperature grease (Molykote).
- When reusing old washers, rough up bearing surface facing cylinder head with coarse sandpaper. Washers must not turn while tightening.
- Flat gasket between cylinder head and camshaft housing must be placed properly to ensure oil supply bore to camshaft is not blocked. Camshaft housing must be completely assembled prior to installation.
