Thrust Bearing End Play

  1. Check crankshaft thrust bearing size and end play. No. 3 main bearing is the thrust bearing. Standard thrust bearing width is 1.184" (30.08 mm).
  2. With crankshaft and inserts installed and cylinder block/lower crankcase section assembled, mount dial indicator using Indicator Adapter (VW 387). Position pointer on crankshaft end.
  3. Carefully move crankshaft back and forth and record end play. Standard end play clearance is .0043-.0123" (.110-.312 mm). Maximum end play is .016" (.40 mm). Replace No. 3 main bearing inserts and/or crankshaft if excessive wear is present.
