Connecting Rods & Bearings
- Use Plastigage and/or micrometer and bore gauge to check connecting rods and crankshaft for proper bearing-to-journal clearance. Maximum clearance is no more than 0.004" (.10 mm).
- Regrind crankshaft and replace rod bearing inserts if clearance is more than specification. When replacing rod bearing inserts on crankshaft, inspect connecting rod bearing insert bore in rod for excessive wear or damage. Replace rod as necessary.
- Inspect rod small end bushing for excessive wear or damage. Standard rod bushing I.D. is 0.9456-.9460" (24.018-24.028 mm). Standard piston pin O.D. is 0.9447-.9449" (23.996-24.000 mm). If piston pin-to-bushing clearance is more than 0.0013" (.032 mm), press old bushing from rod and install new bushing. If necessary, replace piston/pin assembly.CAUTION: Connecting rod stretch bolts should never be reused. Replace rod bolts whenever connecting rods are disassembled. New connecting rod nuts (928.103.172.02), are available with ribbed nut-to-rod cap contact surface. Use these nuts whenever rods are reassembled. DO NOT use old type (smooth) rod nuts from sintered rods on new type cast rods or engine damage will result.
- With new inserts installed and rods assembled in their proper positions, check rod-to-crankshaft web side clearance. If side clearance is more than .004-.016" (.10-.40 mm), replace rod(s).NOTE: The connecting rod ends are offset. Ensure narrow side of rod (with small chamfer) faces adjacent rod and wide side (with large chamfer) aligns with crankshaft web.
- When installing connecting rods onto crankshaft, lubricate new rod bolt threads and bearing surface, tighten rod bolts and nuts to final torque. After installation, check rod side play.
