Drive Belt TENSIONER
The camshaft drive belt tensioning mechanism uses hydraulic dampening and a temperature compensation mechanism to reduce belt load and dampen oscillations. The tensioner roller and carrier is supported against the pull of drive belt by a push rod and piston on a bi-metallic diaphragm spring set. Tensioner is filled with engine oil (which is added only after installation on block).
Replacement tensioners are not oil filled. Oil must be added and unit bled for proper operation. Pockets between tensioner roller housing and engine block are used as oil reservoirs to aid in heat transfer between engine block and tension roller housing and activate bi-metallic diaphragm springs.
- When installing tensioner, ensure sealing surface of block is in good condition. Apply Locktite (No. 574) to sealing surface before installation. When filling tensioner, damping chamber may be bled by pumping tension roller carrier.
- To fill, open bleeder fittings approximately one turn. Attach a piece of tubing to the lower fitting and bleed off air from the top fitting. When tensioner is full, tighten both fittings.
- Check fluid level after 1000 miles and at 15,000 mile intervals thereafter. To check, attach clear piece of hose with a small quantity of oil. Open bleeder and look for escaping air. If no air escapes level is okay. If not, add oil as necessary.
