Camshafts Drive Belt: Checking

  1. On 1986 models there is a cast marker on the inside of the air discharge pipe of the belt/pulley cover. Align the marker with the notch on the front of the camshaft pulley when the engine is stopped at TDC. The camshaft timing may be checked with the motor running by using a timing strobe set to "0" degrees. See Fig 1.

  2. Turn engine in direction of rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder. Marks on camshaft belt pulley and flange mounts of camshaft housing must be aligned in this position.
  3. The belt guard outer cover has been split to allow for the removal of the upper sections without having to remove the power steering pump. Turn engine 2 more turns until TDC mark is reached again and continue turning while checking drive belt for wear and damage. Prepare Camshaft Belt Adjuster (9201) for checking drive belt tension.
  4. Pull out lock pin on camshaft belt adjuster and move testing pin opposite the lock pin to starting position. Place drag needle on gauge needle. Slide camshaft belt adjuster on released belt section of drive belt (roller must fit in tooth gap).
  5. Press down tester on housing slowly until gauge tip is resting on air pump bracket. Read adjuster without tension on tester. Tester must be horizontal to drive belt. Tester must not rest on the plastic cover.
  6. Sliding shoes must rest on entire surface belt. Tester must not be turned or moved on belt during entire checking procedure.
NOTE: The drag needle must always be placed on the gauge needle after the lock pin has engaged to exclude false gauge readings (turn counterclockwise).
  7. Pull out lock pin to disengage tip of gauge. Turn engine in direction of rotation to TDC number one cylinder. Marks on camshaft and flange bearings must be aligned in this position.
