Checking Cylinders No. 1-4

  1. Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation to cylinder No. 1 TDC. Both distributor rotors face to the left.
  2. Marks on camshaft sprockets and flanges must also be aligned in proper position. Check cast index marks on camshafts. Both marks must face the exhaust side.
  3. Install Dial Gauge Holder (VW 387) with dial gauge on the cylinder head. Set dial gauge with a .20" (5 mm) preload to "0" on the hydraulic lifter of cylinder No. 1 intake valve. See Fig 1.
  4. Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation past TDC for No. 1 cylinder, while observing the dial gauge. Continue turning until a value of .063" (1.6 mm) lift is reached. The 20 degree ATDC (cylinder No. 6) mark must also now be lined up with the pointer on drive belt cover.

  5. If the alignment of pointer and 20 degree mark is not correct, install 3 additional bolts (5 mm x 15 mm) into camshaft sprocket to prevent camshaft and sprocket from turning while loosening camshaft bolts.
  6. Turn crankshaft in direction of rotation until dial gauge reads .063" (1.6 mm) lift. Loosen camshaft bolts, while holding camshaft. Remove the 3 additional bolts. Turn crankshaft to 20 degree ATDC (cylinder No. 6).
  7. Install the 3 additional bolts and tighten the 10 mm bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (65 N.m). Remove additional helping bolts and re-check timing.
