Camshaft Chain TENSIONER: Removal

  1. With vehicle on ground remove cross brace (under tension). Remove air intake hoses and air cleaner assembly. Remove hoses from air intake manifold and air pump.
  2. Remove air intake duct and air intake manifold. Remove lifting eye from left rear of engine.
  3. Remove spark plug connections and ignition leads. Remove camshaft cover. Remove hollow union bolt with check valve from cylinder head. A seal is only used underneath the bolt head. Remove chain tensioner from head.
  4. Chain tensioner piston has spring force. Compress piston when removing and bind together with a suitable piece of wire after removing. Chain tensioner piston on right side for cylinders 1-4 presses chain up, on left side for cylinder 5-8 presses chain down. See Fig 1.

CAUTION: Never turn the engine counterclockwise with timing belt installed. Severe damage to camshaft drive belt tensioner will result.
NOTE: Drive belt tension must be to specification (4.5 scale units).
