Overhaul - A/T - AUDI 087, 087E, 089: Identification

Transaxle type may be identified by group of numbers cast into top rear of case. Transaxle model code is identified by group of figures stamped into torque converter housing. These figures consist of model code and build date code. Audi uses type 087 and 089 transaxles. Volkswagen Quantum uses type 087 and 089 transaxles. Porsche 944 is equipped with type 087 transaxle. Turbine shaft length is the primary difference between the 2 transaxle types. Type 087 uses 16.71" (424.5 mm) shaft and type 089 uses 15.82" (401.7 mm) shaft. Testing, disassembly and reassembly procedures are the same for both types.
