Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine assembly with transaxle.
  2. Install the engine stand.
  3. Remove the intake manifold.
  4. Disconnect the fuel tube sub-assembly.
  5. Remove the fuel delivery pipe sub-assembly.
  6. Remove the fuel injector assembly.
  7. Remove the ignition coil assembly.
  8. Remove the oil level dipstick sub-assembly.
  9. Remove the No. 1 exhaust manifold heat insulator.
  10. Remove the manifold stay.
  11. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  12. Remove the ventilation hose.
  13. Remove the No. 3 water by-pass hose.
  14. Remove the No. 1 water by-pass pipe.
  15. Remove the water by-pass hose.
  16. Remove the inlet water hose.
  17. Remove the inlet water.
  18. Remove the thermostat.
  19. Remove the radio setting condenser.
  20. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
  21. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.
  22. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  23. Remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly.

  25. Remove the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
  26. Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting bracket.

  28. Remove the 4 bolts and oil filter bracket.

  30. Remove the 2 O-rings.

  32. Remove the 19 bolts.

    NOTE: Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover, cylinder block, and cylinder head.
    IMPORTANT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  34. Remove the timing chain cover by prying between the timing chain cover and cylinder head or cylinder block with a screwdriver.

  36. Remove the 3 O-rings.

  38. Remove the 3 bolts and water pump.

  40. Remove the gasket.

  42. Place the timing chain cover on wooden blocks.
  43. NOTE: Do not damage the surface of the oil seal press fit hole.
    IMPORTANT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  44. Using a screwdriver, pry out the oil seal.
  45. Remove the chain tensioner slipper.
  46. Remove the No. 1 chain vibration damper.
  47. Remove the chain sub-assembly.

  49. Remove the 2 bolts and No. 2 chain vibration damper.
  50. Remove the No. 2 chain sub-assembly.
  51. Hand tighten the crank pulley bolt.

    NOTE: Do not rotate the crankshaft more than 90°. If the crankshaft is rotated too much without the timing chain installed, the valves may hit the pistons and cause damage.
  53. Turn the crankshaft 90 degrees clockwise to align the adjusting hole of the oil pump drive shaft sprocket with the groove of the oil pump.
  54. Remove the crank pulley bolt.

  56. Insert a pin punch (3 mm) into the adjusting hole of the oil pump drive shaft sprocket to lock the gear in position, and then remove the nut.

  58. Remove the bolt, chain tensioner plate, and spring.

  60. Remove the crankshaft timing sprocket, oil pump drive shaft gear, and No. 2 chain sub-assembly.
  61. Remove No. 1 crankshaft position sensor plate.

  63. Remove No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  64. Remove the 10 bolts and 2 nuts.

    NOTE: Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the crankcase, chain cover, and oil pan.
  66. Insert the blade of oil pan seal cutter between the crankcase and oil pan. Cut through the sealer and remove the oil pan.

  68. Remove the 3 bolts and oil pump.
