Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Discharge the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .
  2. Align the front wheels facing straight ahead.
  3. Remove the front wheel.
  4. Remove the engine under cover LH.
  5. Remove the engine under cover RH.
  6. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  7. Drain the manual transaxle oil for the manual transaxle.
  8. Drain the automatic transaxle fluid for the automatic transaxle.

    NOTE: Attempting to disengage both front and rear clips at the same time may cause the cover to break.
  10. Remove the engine cover.

    Hold the rear of the cover and raise it to disengage the 2 clips on the rear of the cover. Continue to raise the cover to disengage the 2 clips on the front of the cover and remove the cover.

  11. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  12. Separate the air cleaner filter element from the air cleaner.

  14. Disconnect the engine wire harness clamp from air cleaner case.
  15. Remove the 3 bolts and the air cleaner case.
  16. CAUTION: Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT WARNING .
  17. Disconnect the battery cables.
  18. Remove the bolt and loosen the nut.
  19. Remove the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement .

  21. Remove the battery carrier. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement .
  22. Separate the 2 wire harness clamps from the battery carrier.

  24. Remove the 2 bolts.
  25. Separate the radiator pipe from the battery carrier.
  26. Remove the 4 bolts and battery carrier.

  28. Disengage the clamp (1) from the upper radiator hose.
  29. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the cylinder head.

  31. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet hose.

  33. If equipped with manual transmission, remove the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 cables from the transaxle.
  34. Remove the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 cables from the control cable bracket.

  36. If equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect the control cable from the control cable support.
  37. Remove the nut and disconnect the control cable from the control shaft lever.
  38. Remove the clip and disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket.
  39. Remove the bolt and disconnect the clamp of the control cable.

  41. Disconnect the fuel vapor feed hose assembly.

  43. Disconnect the union to connector tube hose.

  45. Disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses from the oil cooler tube, if equipped with automatic transaxle.

  47. Disconnect the outlet heater water hose from the engine.

  49. Disconnect the inlet heater water hose from the engine.

  51. Disconnect the fuel tube sub-assembly.
  52. Release the claw and remove the No. 1 fuel pipe clamp.

    IMPORTANT:
    • Remove any dirt and foreign matter from the fuel tube connector before performing this work.
    • Do not allow any scratches or foreign matter on the parts when disconnecting, as the fuel tube connector has the O-rings that seal the pipe. Perform this work by hand. Do not use any tools.
    • Do not forcibly bend, kink or twist the nylon tube.
    • Protect the disconnected parts by covering them with vinyl bags after disconnecting the fuel tube.
    • If the fuel tube connector and pipe are stuck, push and pull to release them.
  54. Pinch the retainer then pull the fuel tube connector out of the pipe.
  55. Remove the V-ribbed belt.
  56. Remove the generator assembly.
  57. Separate the compressor with pulley assembly with air conditioning system.
  58. Disconnect the connector.

  60. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts.

    IMPORTANT: Secure the compressor and hoses off to the side instead of discharging the A/C system.
  62. Using a TORX socket wrench, remove the 2 stud bolts and compressor with pulley assembly.

  64. Separate the clutch release cylinder assembly-for manual transaxle.

    Remove the 4 bolts and clutch tube bracket, and separate the clutch release cylinder assembly.

  66. Disconnect the wire harness.
  67. Pull up the lever and disconnect the ECM connector.

  69. Remove the 2 nuts.
  70. Remove the 3 connectors and 2 clamps from the engine room junction block and disconnect the wire harness.

  72. Remove the bolt & clamp (manual transaxle)

  74. Remove the bolt and clamp for the automatic transaxle.
  75. Disconnect all the wire harnesses and connectors. Make sure that no wire harness is connected between the body and engine.
  76. Secure the steering wheel.
  77. Remove the column hole cover silencer sheet.
  78. Separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
  79. Disconnect the No. 1 steering column hole cover sub-assembly.
  80. Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly.
  81. Remove the front axle shaft LH nut.
  82. IMPORTANT: Perform the same procedure for the LH side.
  83. Remove the front axle shaft RH nut.
  84. Disconnect the front speed sensor LH.
  85. IMPORTANT: Perform the same procedure for the LH side.
  86. Disconnect the front speed sensor RH.
  87. Separate the tie rod end sub-assembly LH.
  88. IMPORTANT: Perform the same procedure for the LH side.
  89. Separate the tie rod end sub-assembly RH.
  90. Separate the front stabilizer link assembly LH.
  91. IMPORTANT: Perform the same procedure for the LH side.
  92. Separate the front stabilizer link assembly RH.
  93. Separate the front lower No. 1 suspension arm sub-assembly LH.
  94. IMPORTANT: Perform the same procedure for the LH side.
  95. Separate the front lower No. 1 suspension arm sub-assembly RH.

  97. Separate the steering knuckle with axle hub LH.
    1. Put matchmarks on the drive shaft and axle hub.
    2. Using a plastic-faced hammer, disconnect the front axle assembly LH.
  98. IMPORTANT: Perform the same procedure for the LH side.
  99. Separate the steering knuckle with axle hub RH.
  100. Remove the front drive shaft assembly LH. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side .
  101. Remove the front drive shaft assembly RH. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side .
  102. Remove the front drive shaft hole snap ring LH.
  103. Remove the front drive shaft hole snap ring RH.
  104. Remove the flywheel housing under cover-for automatic transaxle.
  105. Remove the drive plate and torque converter clutch setting bolt-for automatic transaxle.
  106. Remove the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly.
  107. Remove the center engine mounting member sub-assembly.
  108. Remove the engine assembly with transaxle.
  109. IMPORTANT: Place the engine on wooden blocks or equivalent so that the engine is level.
  110. Set the engine lifter.

  112. Remove the bolt and 2 nuts, and separate the engine mounting insulator RH.

  114. Remove the through bolt and nut, and separate the engine mounting insulator LH.
  115. Carefully remove the engine with transaxle from the vehicle.

  117. Remove the bolt and nut, and remove the front engine mounting insulator.

  119. Remove the through bolt and the rear engine mounting insulator.

    IMPORTANT: Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting insulator is necessary.
  121. Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting insulator LH.

  123. Remove the engine mounting insulator RH.
  124. Disconnect the clamp, and release the relay block assembly.

  126. Remove the 3 bolts and radiator reserve tank.

    IMPORTANT: Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting insulator is necessary.
  128. Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting insulator RH.

  130. Remove the bolt and wire harness bracket.

  132. Install the 2 engine hangers with the 2 bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten to 43 N.m (32 lb ft).

  133. Remove the flywheel housing side cover.
  134. Remove the starter assembly.
  135. Remove the transaxle assembly.
  136. Remove the clutch cover assembly for the manual transaxle.
  137. Remove the clutch disc assembly for the manual transaxle.
  138. Remove the flywheel sub-assembly for the manual transaxle.
  139. Remove the drive plate and ring gear subassembly for the automatic transaxle.
  140. Remove the engine wire harness.
