Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect the torque converter clutch assembly.
  2. Install the torque converter clutch assembly.

  4. Using vernier calipers, measure dimension A between the transaxle fitting part of the engine and the converter fitting part of the drive plate.

  6. Set the key (1) at the top of the front oil pump drive gear and put a matchmark on the housing.

  8. Put a matchmark on the torque converter so that its groove is clearly indicated.

  10. Align the matchmark (1) on the case with the one on the converter and fit the spline of the input shaft to the spline of the turbine runner.

    NOTE: Rotate the converter approximately 180 degrees.
  12. Rotating the converter, fit the spline of the stator shaft with that of the stator.

    NOTE: Do not apply excessive force to the converter when rotating it.
  14. Rotating the converter, align the mark (1) on the case with the one on the converter and fit the key of the oil pump drive gear into the keyway of the converter.

  16. Using vernier calipers and a straightedge, measure dimension B and check that dimension B is greater than dimension A.

    Standard: A + 1 mm (0.04 in) or more.

    Subtract the thickness of the straightedge from the measured value to gain dimension B.

    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
  18. Install the speedometer driven hole cover sub-assembly to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (1) and tighten to 5.5 N.m (49 lb in).

  20. Install the No. 1 transmission control cable bracket to the automatic transaxle with the 2 bolts (1) and tighten to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).

  22. Install the rear engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle with the 3 bolts (1) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 lb ft).

  24. Install the front engine mounting bracket to the automatic transaxle with the 4 bolts (1) and tighten to 65 N.m (45 lb ft).

  26. Install the engine mounting bracket LH to the automatic transaxle with the 3 bolts (1) and tighten to 52 N.m (38 lb ft).

    NOTE: Confirm that the 2 knock pins on the transaxle are aligned with the engine block before installing the transaxle.
  28. Install the automatic transaxle to the engine with the 7 bolts (1) and tighten to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
  29. Install the engine mounting insulator LH.
  30. Install the starter assembly.
  31. Apply ATF to a new O-ring and install it to the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly.

  33. Install the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (1) and tighten to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).
  34. Install the transmission oil level gage sub-assembly to the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly.

  36. Connect the 2 oil cooler hoses to the 2 unions with the 2 hose clamps.
  37. Install the oil cooler tube to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (3) and tighten to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).
  38. Apply a few drops of adhesive to 2 threads on the tip of the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts.

    Apply Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent.

    NOTE: First install the different colored bolt and then install the remaining 5 bolts.
  40. Install the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench. Tighten the bolts to 28N.m (21 lb ft).

  42. Install the flywheel housing under cover to the automatic transaxle.
  43. Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (All Wheel Drive) or Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement (Two Wheel Drive) .

  45. Install the transmission control cable support to the automatic transaxle with the bolt (1) and tighten to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).
  46. Connect the clamp onto the transmission control cable support and connect the speed sensor connector to the speed sensor.

  48. Connect the transmission wire connector, park/neutral position switch connector (2) and 2 wire harness clamps.
  49. Install the transmission control cable assembly.

  51. Install the breather hose (1).
  52. Install the wire harness.
  53. Install the battery tray.
  54. Install the battery.
  55. Install the air cleaner case.
  56. Install the outer cowl top panel.
  57. Install the air inlet panel. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement .
  58. Connect the cable to negative battery terminal.

  60. Install the hood assembly with the 4 bolts (1) and tighten to 13 N.m (10 lb ft).

  62. Install the washer hose (2) and 2 washer hose clamps (1).
  63. Inspect the hood sub-assembly.
  64. Adjust the hood sub-assembly.
  65. Install the front wheels.
  66. NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected.
  67. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.
  68. Add the automatic transaxle fluid.
  69. Inspect the transaxle fluid level.
  70. Inspect for exhaust gas leak.
  71. Adjust the shift lever position.
  72. Inspect the shift lever position.
  73. Install the engine under covers.
  74. Inspect and adjust the front wheel alignment.
  75. Install the No. 2 cylinder head cover.
  76. Check the ABS speed sensor signal.
  77. NOTE: Perform the reset memory (at initialization) when replacing the automatic transaxle assembly.
  78. Reset the memory.
