Rear Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair



Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution (Battery Disconnect Caution).
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:

* Transaxle Replacement (Removal and Replacement) for the MU4 transmission
* Transaxle Replacement (Transaxle Replacement) for the MK5 transmission

3. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair).




4. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement (Service and Repair).





Important: To protect the crankshaft from damage, wrap the tip of the screwdriver with tape.


5. Use a screwdriver and pry out the crankshaft rear oil seal.



Installation Procedure





1. Apply multi-purpose grease to the new crankshaft rear oil seal lip.

Important: Tap the oil seal in until its surface is flush with the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer edge.


2. Using a hammer, lightly tap the crankshaft rear oil seal into place.




3. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement (Service and Repair).
4. If equipped with a manual transmission, install the clutch and pressure plate. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair).
5. Install the transaxle assembly. Refer to the following:

* Transaxle Replacement (Removal and Replacement) for the MU4 transmission
* Transaxle Replacement (Transaxle Replacement) for the MK5 transmission


Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice).

6. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten the battery cable bolt to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
