Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (LNJ Static Fill) or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LNJ GE 47716 Fill) or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LY7 Static Fill) or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LY7 GE 47716 Fill) .
  2. Remove the engine left side spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement .

  4. Remove the spark plug wire retainer support bolt (2) and support (1).
  5. Remove the engine left side spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .
  6. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Removal - Left Side .
  7. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Lower Intake Manifold Replacement .
  8. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  9. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement (LNJ) .
  10. Remove the engine left side exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side (LNJ) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side (LY7) .

  12. Remove the cylinder head bolts and discard.
  13. Remove the cylinder head.

  15. Remove the cylinder head gasket.
  16. IMPORTANT: All gasket mating surfaces must remain free of oil and foreign material. Refer to Sealers, Adhesives, and Lubricants  for the correct part number to use to clean surfaces.
  17. Clean the following areas:
    • The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, intake manifold, and exhaust manifold
    • The cylinder block bolt threads
