Rotational Torque Measurement: Measurement

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Pontiac Torrent and 2009 Chevrolet Equinox. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. Rotate the transmission assembly so that the torque converter housing side is facing up.
  2. Install the front differential assembly (13) into the empty transmission case.

  4. Install the torque converter housing assembly (10) to the transmission case assembly.
  5. CAUTION: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  6. Install the following fasteners and hand tighten.
    • Tighten 1 - torque converter housing studs (3) M8 x 1.25 x 30 .
    • Tighten 1 - torque converter housing bolt Torx (8) M8 x 1.25 x 30 .
    • Tighten 9 - torque converter housing bolt (4) M8 x 1.25 x 30 .

  8. Tighten the torque converter housing bolts in sequence. Tighten to 29 N.m (21 lb ft).
  9. Fig 4: Measuring The Rotational Torque Required To Slowly Rotate The Front Differential Assembly Using J 46318

  10. Insert DT-47687:  adapter (1) into the axle shaft opening of the differential and rotate DT-47687:  adapter (1) until it engages with the differential pinion shaft (645).
  11. Using a torque wrench, measure the rotational torque required to slowly rotate the front differential assembly and note the readings. Rotational torque specification should be within 0.70-1.20 N.m (6-11 lb in).
  12. If the obtained measurement is within specifications, the differential shim replacement is not necessary.

If obtained measurement is not within the listed specifications, the front differential bearing race shim must be replaced.

  13. Remove DT-47687:  adapter (1) from the front differential assembly.
  14. Remove the torque converter housing assembly and the front differential assembly from the transmission case.
