Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement

Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement

Callout Component Name
NOTE: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
  • The steering column
  • The intermediate shaft
  • The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.
NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .
Fastener Tightening Specifications:  Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

Preliminary Procedure

  1. Remove the wheelhouse liner. Refer to Hood Latch Release Cable Replacement .
  2. Remove the knee bolster bracket. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement .
1 Intermediate Shaft to Steering Column Bolt
Tip:  Discard bolt after use.

Tightening Specifications:  Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

2 Intermediate Shaft to Steering Gear Bolt
Tip:  Discard bolt after use.

Tightening Specifications:  Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

3 Intermediate Shaft to Modular Plate Seal
Tip:  Ensure that the primary and secondary seals are in properly seated in the modular plate.
