Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (L26, L32 GE 47716 Fill) or Draining and Filling Cooling System (L26, L32 Static Fill) or Draining and Filling Cooling System (LS4 GE 47716 Fill) or Draining and Filling Cooling System (LS4 Static Fill) .
  2. Remove the engine flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  4. IMPORTANT: Ensure not to damage the crankshaft outside diameter surface with any tool.
  5. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts.
  6. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal housing and gasket.

  8. Place the crankshaft rear oil seal housing face down on a clean surface and support with blocks of wood.
  9. Use a suitable driving tool and hammer and lightly tap around the outer edge of the seal to remove it.
  10. Inspect the crankshaft for nicks or burrs on the surface that contacts the seal.
  11. Repair or replace the crankshaft, if necessary.
