Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 1:  Perform the I/M System Check before performing this test. Failure to do so may result in difficulty updating the status to YES.
  2. 3:  This step is to initiate the EVAP System Test and to determine whether or not the EVAP System Test has run. If the system is operating correctly, the scan tool indicates that the system is complete and the I/M System Status updates to YES. If the EVAP Service Bay Test aborts because of lost enable conditions, the test can be repeated once the enable criteria is met.
  3. 5:  The EVAP system uses an electric vacuum pump in order to pressurize the system for diagnostic testing. After the engine has been OFF for 5 hours, the pump and EVAP solenoids will be energized, if the diagnostic enabling conditions have been met. An I/M System Status of YES, indicates that the diagnostic has run. If no DTCs are set, the EVAP system has passed.
  4. 6:  An I/M System Status of NO, indicates that the EVAP system diagnostic did not run to completion.
Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Set Procedure

  1. Use a scan tool in order to select Special Functions.
  2. Determine if the vehicle is equipped with a Service Bay Test for the EVAP System.
Is the vehicle equipped with EVAP Service Bay Test?		 Go to Step 3  Go to Step 5

  1. Verify that the vehicle is within the Conditions for Running.
  2. Turn OFF all of the accessories, e.g., A/C, blower fan, etc.
  3. Following the directions on the scan tool, perform the EVAP Service Bay Test. Refer to Service Bay Test .
Did the EVAP System complete the Service Bay Test with no DTCs set?		 System OK Go to Step 4 
4 Go to the appropriate service information for diagnosis and repair of the condition as necessary. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle in Vehicle DTC Information
Is the repair complete?		 Go to Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) Complete System Set Procedure  -

  1. Verify that the vehicle is within the Conditions for Running.
  2. Turn OFF all of the accessories, e.g., A/C, blower fan, etc.
    3. IMPORTANT: Once the engine is started, DO NOT turn the engine OFF until instructed to turn the engine OFF.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Drive the vehicle for at least 10 minutes in city or highway traffic.
  5. Allow the engine to idle for 5 minutes.
  6. Turn OFF the engine and let the vehicle sit with the ignition OFF for at least 6 hours.
  7. Turn ON the ignition and check the I/M System Status with the scan tool.
Did the EVAP System Status update to YES?		 Go to Step 7  Go to Step 6 
6 
  1. The EVAP system diagnostic did not run to completion.
  2. Repeat the actions in Step 5.
Did the EVAP System Status update to YES?		 Go to Step 7  Go to Diagnostic Aids
7 Use a scan tool in order to observe the DTC Information, including the Last Test Failed screen.
Does the scan tool indicate any failed DTCs?		 Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle in Vehicle DTC Information System OK
