Condition
Some owners may comment that the AIR BAG indicator illuminates intermittently in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
Cause
There may be an intermittent connection (crimping) between the wires and the terminals in either the driver or passenger side impact air bag module pigtail connector.
Correction
Caution:
In order to avoid deploying the air bag when troubleshooting the SIR system, use only the equipment specified in this bulletin and the instructions given in this bulletin. Failure to use the specified equipment as instructed could cause air bag deployment, personal injury to you or someone else, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.
Caution:
It any water has entered the vehicle's interior up to the level Of the carpet or higher and soaks the carpet, the Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) and the SDM harness connector may need to be replaced. The SDM could be activated when powered, which could cause deployment of the air bag(s) and result in personal iniury. Before attempting these procedures, the SIR system must be disabled.
Important:
With the ignition OFF, inspect the SDM mounting area, including the carpet. If any significant soaking or evidence of significant soaking is detected, you must perform the following steps:
1. Determine the reason and repair if needed, the path that allowed the water to enter the vehicle.
2. Remove all water.
3. Repair any water damage.
4. Replace the 5DM harness connector terminals if corrosion is evident.
5. Replace the SDM.
Failure to follow these steps could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury, or otherwise unneeded SIR system repairs.
The diagnostic procedure will help you find and repair the SIR system malfunction for DTCs B0029 and B0041. For best results, follow the sequence listed.
Refer to the SIR sub-section of the Restraints section of the appropriate Service Manual for information on replacing the side impact air bag module assembly.
Important:
If replacing a side impact air bag module assembly, it is not necessary to completely remove the seatback cover. Only remove the cover as far as necessary to access the module. As a result, it is not necessary to remove the head restraint retainers.
