OnStar(R) Vehicle Interface Unit (VIU) Replacement

IMPORTANT: Never swap OnStar(R) Vehicle Integration Units (VIU), or the Vehicle Communication Units (VCU) from other vehicles. Transfer of OnStar(R) components from other vehicles should NOT be done. Each OnStar(R) component has a unique identification number. The VIU has a 10 - digit Specific Station Identification (STID) and the VCU has a 11 - digit specific Electronic Serial Number (ESN). These identification numbers are used by the National Cellular Telephone Network and OnStar(R) systems, and are stored in the General Motors vehicle history files by VIN.

Removal Procedure




1. Remove the right insulator panel.
2. Remove the instrument panel compartment.
3. Remove the screws securing the VIU bracket to the instrument panel metal brace.




4. Disconnect the red 32 - way electrical connectors and the blue 32 - way electrical connector.
5. Disconnect the Global Position System (GPS) cables from the VIU.




6. Remove the VIU from the bracket by rotating the module upwards to release the hook tab.
7. The old VIU must be returned for core credit.

Installation Procedure




1. Record the 10 - digit STID number from the label on the new module.
2. Install the VIU to the bracket by rotating downwards into the hook tab.
3. Connect the GPS cables to the VIU.




4. Connect the red 32 - way electrical connectors and the blue 32 - way electrical connector.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.




5. Install the screws securing the VIU bracket to the instrument panel metal brace.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

6. Install the IP compartment.
7. Install the right insulator panel.
8. Contact the OnStar(R) Dealer Support line by pressing the OnStar(R) button twice.
The 10 - digit STID number recorded will be needed by the OnStar(R) Dealer Support line.
