Malfunction Indicator Light Operation
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is located on the instrument panel and is displayed as CHECK ENGINE lamp.
MIL Function - MIL informs driver that a malfunction has occurred and vehicle should be taken in for service as soon as possible. MIL illuminates during a bulb test and a system test. A DTC will be stored if a MIL is requested by diagnostic.
MIL Illumination - MIL will illuminate with ignition switch in RUN position. MIL will turn OFF when engine is started. MIL will remain On if self-diagnostic system has detected a malfunction. MIL may turn Off if malfunction is not present. If MIL is illuminated and engine stalls, MIL will remain illuminated so long as ignition switch is in RUN position. If MIL is not illuminated and engine stalls, MIL will not illuminate until ignition switch is cycled off, then on.
Engine Controls Diagnostic System Check - Perform engine controls diagnostic system check, when following conditions are present:
- When MIL does not turn On when ignition switch is turned to RUN position - See above for MIL operation.
- When MIL remains On while engine is running.
- When MIL is flashing while engine is running.
- When a driveability symptom is determined.
