Test Ag: Malfunction Indicator Lamp Inoperative: Testing

NOTE: For circuit identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS in article ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

  1. If engine controls diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine controls diagnostic system check has not been performed, see ENGINE CONTROLS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in BODY CONTROL MODULES - AZTEK article.
  2. Check underhood fuse block PCM fuse (10-amp) and IGN 1 MAIN fuse (10-amp). See Figure. If fuses are not blown, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step  10.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 80-pin harness connector. PCM is located in engine compartment, inside air cleaner assembly. Connect fused (3-amp) jumper wire between ground and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 5 (Brown/White wire). See Figure. If MIL does not illuminate, go to next step. If MIL illuminates, go to step  9.
  4. If jumper wire fuse does not blow, go to next step. If jumper wire fuse blows, go to step  11.
  5. Remove the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for open in Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector terminal A2 and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, go to step  14.
  6. Using a test light connected to ground, probe MIL battery positive voltage circuit, Purple wire at IPC harness connector terminal B4. See Figure. If test lamp does not illuminate, go to next step. If test lamp illuminates, go to step  8.
  7. Repair open in MIL battery positive voltage circuit, Purple wire between IGN 0 fuse (2-amp) and IPC harness connector terminal B4. After repairs are made, go to step  14.
  8. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals at IPC harness connector. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  14. If no problem exists, go to step  12.
  9. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals at PCM harness connector. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  14. If no problem exists, go to step  13.
  10. Repair short to ground in MIL battery positive voltage circuit, Purple wire between IGN 0 fuse (2-amp) and IPC harness connector terminal B4. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repairs are made, go to step  14.
  11. Repair short to voltage in MIL control circuit, Brown/White wire between IPC harness connector A2 and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 5. See Figure and Figure . After repairs are made, go to step  14.
  12. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step  14.
  13. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - AZTEK article. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  14. Check system for normal operation. If system operates normally, test is complete. If system does not operate normally, go to step  2.
