Test U: Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative
- If hydraulic brake system description and operation have been reviewed, go to next step. If hydraulic brake system description and operation has not been reviewed, see appropriate article in BRAKES.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position while observing Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). If BRAKE indicator illuminates during bulb check, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate during bulb check, go to step 11.
- Apply parking brake. If BRAKE indicator illuminates, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Release parking brake. Disconnect brake fluid level switch 2- pin harness connector. Connect fused (3-amp) jumper wire between brake fluid level harness connector terminals "A" (Black wire) and "B" (Tan/White wire). If BRAKE indicator illuminates, go to next step. If red BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, go to step 9.
- Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals or bad ground in brake fluid level indicator switch. If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 17.
- Check brake fluid level indicator switch for normal operation. If indicator switch operates normally, concern may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittent problems, see PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS under INTERMITTENTS. If indicator switch does not operate normally, go to step 15.
- Disconnect parking brake switch harness connector. Connect fused (3-amp) jumper wire between ground and parking brake harness connector. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator illuminates, go to step 10.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect pink BCM 24-pin harness connector C2. BCM is located in center console fuse block. Check for an open or high resistance in parking brake warning lamp switch signal circuit, Orange/Black wire between BCM harness connector C2 terminal A1 and parking brake switch harness connector. See Figure. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 17. If no problem exists, go to step 12.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect IPC 24-pin harness connector. IPC is located in left side instrument panel. Check for an open or high resistance in brake fluid level indicator switch signal circuit, Tan/White wire between IPC harness connector terminal A5 and brake fluid level indicator switch harness connector terminal "B". See Figure. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 17. If no problem exists, go to step 11.
- Check for poor or loose ground connections at parking brake switch, switch is case grounded. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 17. If no problem exists, go to step 13.
- Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals at IPC harness connectors. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 17. If no problem exists, go to step 14.
- Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals at BCM harness connectors. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 17. If no problem exists, go to step 16.
- Replace parking brake switch. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in BRAKES. After repairs are made, go to step 17.
- Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step 17.
- Replace brake fluid level indicator switch. After repairs are made, go to step 17.
- Replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - AZTEK article. After repairs are made, go to next step.
- Check system for normal operation. If system operates normally, test is complete. If system does not operate normally, go to step 2.
