Test P: Head Up Display Intensity Does Not Vary

  1. If head up display diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If head up display diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to HEAD UP DISPLAY DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Adjust Head Up Display (HUD) dimmer switch from lowest to highest intensity levels. If HUD does not dim normally, go to next step. If HUD dims normally, concern may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittent problems, see PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS  under INTERMITTENTS.
  3. Move HUD image up and down. If image moves as commanded, go to next step. If image does not move as commanded, go to step  6.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect HUD module 12-pin harness connector. HUD module is located under trim panel on top of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe HUD module harness connector terminal "F". See Figure. Adjust HUD dimmer switch from lowest to highest intensity levels. If test light does not change from dim to bright, go to next step. If test light changes from dim to bright, go to step  7.
  5. Check for open in HUD dimmer signal circuit, White wire between HUD module harness connector terminal "F" and HUD dimmer switch harness connector terminal No. 6. See Figure and Figure . If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  11. In no problem exists, go to step  8.
  6. Check for open in HUD dimmer switch ground circuit, Black wire between ground and HUD dimmer switch harness connector terminal No. 3. Ground point is located under left side of instrument panel on cross beam between parking brake assembly and steering column. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  11. In no problem exists, go to step  8.
  7. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in HUD module harness connector. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in HUD dimmer switch harness connector. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  11. If no problem exists, go to step  9.
  8. Check for poor, loose or corroded terminals in HUD dimmer switch harness connector. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  11. If no problem exists, go to step  10.
  9. Replace HUD module. See HEAD UP DISPLAY MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step  11.
  10. Replace HUD dimmer switch. See HEAD UP DISPLAY DIMMER SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  11. Check system for normal operation. If system operates normally, test is complete. If system does not operate normally, go to step  2.
