Test Aa: Engine Oil Pressure Indicator Always On

  1. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument panel cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start engine. If LOW OIL PRESSURE indicator displays in message center, go to next step. If LOW OIL PRESSURE indicator does not display in message center, concern may be intermittent. For aid in diagnosing intermittent problems, see PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS  under INTERMITTENTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) IPC data list. If ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter displays low, go to next step. If ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter does not display low, go to step  7.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine oil pressure switch harness connector. Engine oil pressure switch is located at left lower side of engine block. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter in PCM IPC data list. If ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter does not display OK, go to next step. If ENGINE OIL PRESSURE parameter displays OK, go to step  8.
  5. Check for short to ground in engine oil pressure indicator switch signal circuit, Tan/Black wire between engine oil pressure switch harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 19. See Figure. If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step  9.
  6. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - AZTEK article. After repairs are made, go to step  9.
  7. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are made, go to step  9.
  8. Replace engine oil pressure switch. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  9. Operate system to verify repair. If system operates normally, testing is complete. If system does not operate normally, go to step  2.
